Today's Web is more than a billion sites and a vertiginous amount of text, photos and videos, just a click away. To find your way around this mass of content and information, a key: the search engine. Well used, it can respond to very specific requests. Demonstration in this Google search guide.
Among the many search engines on the Web, we have chosen to introduce Google Search, for several reasons. First, it is the most used, since it alone capitalizes more than 60% of global requests. It is especially one of the most effective and most accurate in its answers. Doing a search on Google is very simple. Just enter a word to see, in a fraction of a second, a list of sites classified by relevance. The operation of the search engine of the American giant is based on algorithms, based on hundreds of criteria (keywords, links between sites, popularity ...). Most of the time, we find what we are looking for in the first results. When this is not the case, Google offers options, filters, which provide more specific suggestions than those delivered by default. Mastering this tool allows you to quickly obtain answers, but also to discover rich or pointed sites when one is interested in a particular field.

Set search preferences

Before starting your search, set your preferences by clicking on the settings at the bottom right of the google.com page. Then go to the search parameters menu. If your computer is used as a family, you can enable the safesearch filter. It will hide the contents of sexual or violent nature. It is also possible to lock this option, provided to be connected with a Google account.
The following setting is for instant search. This is the system that modifies, in real time, the list of results, depending on what you are entering. Disabling this option results in between 20 and 100 results per page, instead of the 10 displayed by default. Which gives a better overview. If you're signed in to a Google Account, you'll see an option to enable or disable private results. This will allow you to include or exclude from the search results personal items from the Google services you use (Gmail mails, photos, calendars). When you change these settings, be sure to click the save button at the bottom of the page for your changes to take effect.

Do basic research

When you search on Google, you can do without some spelling or typographical rules. Indeed, punctuation, capitalization or accented characters are not taken into account. No need to write your queries, get right to the point: think keywords, But "meteo tomorrow paris". The result will be exactly the same.
When you start typing a word, AutoComplete displays real-time suggestions, based either on your search history (in purple) or on user query statistics (in black). Using the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard, you navigate through these suggestions. To validate one and start the search, press enter.

Understand the results

In fractions of a second, Google displays a list of websites that match your request. Their number (hundreds, thousands or millions, depending on the request) is indicated at the top of the window, grayed out. By default, there are 10 results per page; to access the next 10, click on the bottom of the list. What few people do.
As a geeky saying goes, "the best place to hide a corpse is page 2 of Google results." It is likely that the most interesting answers are not on the front page: those that appear in them are often linked to large generalist sites, national or international. This is due to the size and notoriety of these sites, but also to the fact that they count in their teams of experts in SEO (search engine optimization) techniques to optimize a site to best meet the criteria indexing of Google.

Filter the results of a search

For precise answers, we advise you to use the different tabs placed just below the search box, above the first results. They allow to filter the answers by types of content: news, images, videos, cartography.
